Appearance Design and Comfort
JBL Tour Pro 3 continues the characteristic design of LCD screen. The screen size is about 30% larger than JBL Tour Pro 2 (from 1.45″ to 1.57″), the overall look is lighter, and the screen touch experience is better. The bottom of the charging case is equipped with a USB-C port, an LED indicator light and a round button.
JBL Tour Pro 3 earbuds adopt a short stem in-ear design, and the outer side of the cavity is round. The outer side of the earbud-stem adopts a double-track laminated design, and there is an LED indicator on the top. There is a touch area on the top of the earbud-stem with a frosted texture.
The earbud cavity is relatively large and has an irregular shape. The top of the cavity is designed to shrink towards the ear canal, reducing the sense of pressure on the ear canal. The weight of a single earbud is about 5.5g, which is not very light among similar products, but it is not a particularly obvious burden. Plus, the IPX5 waterproof rating of Tour Pro 3 enhances durability and waterproof performance.
The earbuds are well designed in terms of ergonomics and weight distribution – there is no foreign body sensation or blockage in the ears, and they are very comfortable and stable. In order to meet the needs of different users, JBL Tour Pro 3 provides five sizes of silicone eartips (XS/S/M/L/XL) and comes with a pair of memory foam eartips (M).
Connectivity, App Support and Screen Function
The earbuds support Bluetooth 5.3 and 2.4Ghz connection modes. Open the charging case, find “JBL Tour Pro 3” in the bluetooth list of the phone, and click to complete the connection. Connect the charging case to the phone/PC/tablet via a data cable (USB-C to 3.5MM or USB-C to USB-C) – even if the computer does not support bluetooth, the wireless earbuds can directly play the audio in the computer. It is tested that Windows 11 computers can be used directly without installing drivers.
Also, the Pro3 supports multipoint connection, meaning you can connect it to two devices at the same time and switch between them when you receive a call, or when you pause on one device, and play on the other.
JBL Tour Pro 3 supports JBL Headphones App for Android and iOS. After pairing, you can add headphones directly in the app, and the whole process is very simple. The app provides noise cancelling control, spatial audio options, charging case settings, SilentNow settings, EQ adjustment, Auracast settings, wearing detection, control customization, voice perception mode, sound settings, voice settings, find headset and firmware updates, etc.
Most of the functions of the earbuds can be controlled through the touch screen, which supports color display. You can light up the screen by directly clicking the screen or the button at the bottom of the charging case; after lighting up the screen, the power level of the earbuds and the case will be displayed, and you need to slide to unlock before you can proceed to the next step.
After unlocking the screen, there is a status bar at the top, which displays the bluetooth connection status and headphone battery information, and the current time on the right. Below the status bar is the function control area, and the function items are designed in a card-style design – each card corresponds to a function, and you can switch function cards by sliding left or right.
The screen display effect is good, and the text and numbers are easy to read. The screen click operation is relatively sensitive, but sometimes the sliding response is not sensitive enough.
The language can be set through the screen. The music information played on the phone will also be displayed on the screen, and you can play/pause the song and switch to the next truck. On the volume control page, you can also adjust the volume. Plus, ANC/ambient mode, spatial audio settings, adjust EQ, change connection mode, screen brightness, flashlight, message preview, find headset can all be operated on the screen. Users can also sort or turn off the functions in the JBL Headphones App according to their needs.
Noise Cancelling Performance and Battery Life
JBL Tour Pro 3 uses Fully Adaptive Digital Noise Cancelling 2.0 technology, supporting Active Noise Cancelling (ANC), ambient mode, and free-call mode. Plus, it also supports custom adjustment of noise cancelling intensity levels. Its noise cancelling ability is also very satisfactory. When ANC is turned on and the music volume is adjusted to 50%, it can significantly block external noise interference.
After turning on the ANC mode in the office, the air conditioning noise is almost inaudible and the voice of the person speaking becomes very small. On the subway, the subway running noise is significantly reduced. You can also replace the sponge eartips with better sound insulation. It should be noted that after changing different types of eartips, you need to set them to the corresponding eartip type in the app.
If you want to hear more outside sounds, you can adjust the noise reduction intensity through the slider, or enable the ambient mode and free-call mode. It also has a SilentNow mode – when listening to music to help you sleep, you can set the opening time of the SilentNow mode; when the time is up, all sounds will be automatically turned off, leaving only the noise cancelling function.
The battery capacity of the charging case is 850mAh, and the earbuds is 130mAh. The single battery life with ANC off is up to 10 hours, and the total battery life is up to 44 hours. The battery life with ANC on is up to 8 hours. Turning on LDAC will further reduce the battery life. The case charges using USB-C or Qi wireless charging.
Acoustic Configuration and Sound Quality
JBL TOUR PRO 3 adopts a dual-unit + two-way design. The armature driver is responsible for the treble, with high sensitivity and excellent transient response characteristics – improving the details of the high-frequency and making it more transparent. The 11mm dynamic driver is responsible for the mid- and low-frequency, and uses an ultra-lightweight DLC diaphragm with high rigidity characteristics, which can more accurately restore the sound. The earbuds support AAC, SBC and LDA codecs, and has passed the Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification.
In “Hey Jude”, the resolution is good, the background instruments are separated, the details are clear, and the layering is good. The vocals are clear and transparent, and can restore good vocal characteristics.
The overall resolution is satisfactory and can present rich details. The low-frequency quantity is moderate, the bass extension and thickness are solid, and you can have a good sense of rhythm when listening to rock music, but the low-frequency performance is not particularly strong.
The mid-frequency vocals are transparent and have a high degree of restoration. The high-frequency has moderate brightness, the sound is transparent and smooth, and there is no stimulation.
Also, JBL Tour Pro 3 supports head tracking spatial audio (JBL Spatial 360). When the music mode is turned on, the soundstage will be wider. In “Anything but Ordinary”, this feature gave the song more spatial sense and slightly enhanced the low-frequency.
JBL Tour Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM5 vs Apple AirPods Pro 2
Noise Cancelling Performance: The noise cancelling depth of JBL Tour Pro 3 is comparable to that of Sony WF-1000XM5 in most environments, but it is obviously much better than AirPods Pro 2 in terms of low-frequency noise reduction capability. In terms of noise cancelling comfort, especially the feeling of stuffiness and irritation after long time wear – Pro3 performs best among the three headphones. As long as you match it with the silicone eartips or sponge eartips that suit you, it can almost be worn without feeling.
Sounding Performance: Sony WF-1000XM5 has richer mid- and low-frequency quantity and a stronger sense of surround, while AirPods Pro 2 is relatively bland. The tuning style of JBL Tour Pro 3 is obviously different from these two headphones – its sound is more inclined to mid- and high-frequency details and full-band transparency and naturalness, with moderate low-frequency quantity, but more solid thickness and extension. In terms of personal hearing, the sound of JBL Tour Pro 3 is undoubtedly closer to HiFi and has a wider range of music applications.
