Appearance Design, Comfortable and Battery Life
The Moondrop Robin charging case adopts a short cylindrical design, with white as the main color and frosted surface with a good texture. The top of the case is a piece of plexiglass, through which you can see the Robin pattern (Robin of Honkai: Star Rail), and you can see the changing light and shadow at different angles, which is very cool.
Open the lid, the left and right earbuds are placed horizontally, with three LED lights in the middle – the LED light design is the same as Moondrop Moca, all three-stage. When the 3 lights are on, it means the charging case is fully charged; when the second light is on, the power is less than 60%; when the third light is on, the power is less than 30%.
Moondrop Robin earbuds are similar to custom public mold wired HiFi headphones – the official said that they use the ergonomic design of HiFi earbuds. The cavity size is also similar to Moondrop MAY, and the thickness has increased. The cavity material consists of two parts – the white part of the panel and the front cavity is made of molds, and the blue-purple part in the middle is a 3D printed resin material. There are gold and silver lines on the panel, representing the jewelry and clothing patterns of the Robin. The surface of the blue-purple part is a smooth paint treatment, and there will be a color gradient under different lights.
In terms of comfort, they have a very good fit and stability. However, for some people with small auricles, the earbud cavity will make them seem a little “floating”, and the squeezing of the edge of the auricle may also cause wearing fatigue.
The battery capacity of the charging case is 470mAh, and the earbuds is 40mAh. The single battery life with ANC off is up to 9 hours, and the total battery life is up to 39 hours. The battery life with ANC on is up to 5 hours. Turning on LDAC will further reduce the battery life. The case charges using USB-C or Qi wireless charging.
Connectivity, App Support and Controls
The earphones use the Bluetooth 5.4 protocol and support SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 codec. When connecting for the first time, you need to take out the earphones and select “Robin’s Earphones” in the bluetooth device list of the phone to quickly connect. When using it again, take out the earphones to automatically connect to the last successfully paired bluetooth device.
Also, Moondrop Robin supports multipoint connection and can connect mobile phone and computer at the same time.
Moondrop Robin supports the Moondrop Link App for Android and iOS. The app provides noise cancelling settings, LDAC/LC3 switch, dual device connection switch, touch control settings, preset EQ selection, wearing detection, etc.
The earbuds are controlled by the touch panel. The touch control has good recognition accuracy and response speed. It can recognize single-tap, double-tap, triple-tap and long press operations.
The default control scheme is comprehensive:
- Single-tap L or R earbud: play/pause music
- Double-tap L/R earbud: previous/next track
- Single-tap L or R earbud: answer/hang up call
- Triple-tap L or R earbud: activate voice assistant
- Long press L or R earbud: reject call
- Press and hold L or R earbud for 3s: ANC on/off
It is worth mentioning that the earphones has built-in Robin exclusive voice. There will be special voice reminders when power on/off and switching the noise cancelling mode, which will feel very friendly to game players.
ANC Mode, Transparency Mode and Calls
The earbud cavity is very helpful for improving passive sound insulation. Based on this, active noise cancelling can theoretically have better full-band noise suppression capabilities. Since passive sound insulation has a significant weakening effect on the frequency band where human voices are located, you will find that even if ANC off, it still has a very usable effect.
When ANC mode is turned on in the office, the surrounding noise is significantly reduced, the air conditioner running noise is basically inaudible, and the voices of nearby people are also reduced. The running noise of the subway is significantly reduced, whether listening to music or podcasts, the listening experience is greatly improved. However, the stethoscope effect occasionally occurs in walking scenes.
Moondrop Robin still has a certain lag in dealing with sudden loud noise. On the other hand, the ear pressure sensation exists. Plus, if your auricle is small and you can’t get a good fit when wearing them, the overall noise cancelling perception will also be affected.
Since Moondrop Moca has a special anti-wind noise structure, the anti-wind noise performance of Moondrop TWS has been significantly improved compared to the past. In actual experience, in both ANC mode and transparency mode, Moondrop Robin has a very good ability to suppress wind noise, and only a slight perception can be felt when the wind is against you.
The performance of the transparency mode can only be described as mediocre. It restores the naturalness of the ambient sound to a reasonable degree, and there is no obvious frequency gain, but a certain degree of attenuation can be heard in the high-frequency. The voice usability is lower, which does not affect your ability to hear other people speak, but the voice of the wearer still sounds a bit muffled.
In terms of calls, their sound reception continuity and loudness are good, there is no obvious stability problem, and the other party can hear clearly enough. In a noisy environment, call noise cancelling will play a certain role. Wind noise will have a slight impact on the clarity of the sound pickup, but the wind noise will not be felt too much. The suppression of complex environmental noise is also very obvious.
Acoustic Configuration and Sound Description
Moondrop Robin uses a 10mmTiN ceramic dome diaphragm dynamic driver and a 6mm annular treble planar driver, which is a coaxial hybrid dual-unit acoustic architecture. Additionally, a front cavity acoustic elastic damper is also used. Supports SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 codec.
Low Frequency: The low-frequency quantity is moderate, the thickness and fullness are slightly enhanced, the elasticity is good, and the bass extension is excellent. The speed of retraction and release is moderate, leaving a slight reverberation. The atmosphere is not strong, and there is a slight rich feeling.
Midrange: The distance between the vocals is relatively close, and the mouth shape is slightly larger than the standard one. The texture of the vocals is slightly more important than the line portrayal. It sounds warm and thick, and the lines are not too prominent. The tendency between male and female voices is not obvious.
High Frequency: The brightness of the highs is moderate, and the overall energy is a little less than that of the mid-low frequency, but it sounds like there are some concentrated peaks, which are not irritating. The extension ability of the ultra-high frequency is excellent, and the roll-off is slightly faster, but not too early.
Soundstage: The sense of space is a state where the horizontal and vertical distances are close and the scale is not very large, with a certain sense of boundaries. The sound height is not very high, and the space presents a flat sphere. There is no problem with the separation between the vocal and the instrument, and there is no sense of separation between the drive units. The resolution, dynamics and transients are all good.
In the Moondrop Link app, you can still adjust the sound, it has three levels of gain and five preset EQ built in.
Conclusion
For gamers who like “Honkai: Star Rail”, Moondrop Robin is a good choice. They not only meet the pursuit of customized appearance, but also have good performance in sound quality, noise cancelling and overall experience.
