Appearance Design and Comfort
TOZO Crystal Buds still adopts the classic family design – LED digital battery display. There is a large area in the middle of the charging case for the remaining battery percentage display of the earbuds and case – very convenient. The case lid is designed to be transparent, and you can see the charging indicator of the earbuds inside. A big defect of charging case – it’s very very prone to scratches and fingerprints.
The earbud weigh only 4.4g and provide a comfortable fit. Although you may need to take pressure off your ears every now and then to stay comfortable for a long time. Also, they’re very stable – shake your head vigorously and they won’t come loose.
A great thing about the TOZO Crystal Buds is that they include 6 pairs of replacement eartips in different sizes, which helps ensure that almost anyone can get their own fit. Thanks to the IPX8 waterproof rating, you can use the earbuds for workouts, runs, and even showers (not recommended).
Also, the Crystal Buds lack ANC Noise Cancellation, and the earbuds have less passive noise isolation — which means that when you’re listening to music at low or medium volumes, you can still hear plenty of ambient sounds.
Connectivity, Control and Battery Life
The earbuds uses Bluetooth 5.3 and supports SBC and AAC codec. When connecting for the first time, simply select “TOZO Crystal Buds” in your phone’s bluetooth device list to quickly connect – indicated by a flashing orange/white light. Open the charging case for subsequent use to connect to a successfully paired bluetooth device. The earbud is connected to the mobile phone stably within 10 meters. In an environment without obstacles, the connection will be intermittent if the distance from the mobile phone is more than 10 meters.
All of TOZO’s wireless earbuds have pretty much the same control scheme – comprehensive and easy to use. You can change the touch controls through the TOZO APP for iPhone and Android, the default control scheme is very simple:
- Single-tap L or R earbud – play/pause, answer call
- Double-tap R earbud – next song
- Double-tap L earbud – previous song
- Long press L earbud – Volume down
- Long press R earbud – Volume up
- Long-press L earbud for 2s – reject/end call
- Triple-tap L or R earbud – activate voice assistant
The single battery life is up to 8 hours, and the charging case can fully charge the earbuds 3 times – about 32 hours of the total battery life. Also, the charging case support wireless charging – pleasantly surprised!
Calls, Games and Videos
Although the newly released TOZO Golden X1 has a good call effect, but – it is not recommended to use TOZO Crystal Buds for phone or video calls. Crystal Buds uses ENC noise reduction technology, but the call effect is not ideal.
Your voice will sound natural, but even in quiet places it may drop. I was able to hear relatively clearly during calls, but other side often couldn’t hear me clearly – not to mention the wind noise outside, which got a lot of it through the earbuds.
In addition to making calls, it is not recommended to play games with Crystal Buds. Without a game mode or low-latency mode, the sound sync couldn’t keep up with the on-screen action in games like “Honor of King” and “Game For Peace.”
Watching videos happily is no problem – it has perfect audio and picture sync on Android and iPhone.
APP Support and Sound Quality
Supporting TOZO APP is where the $29 TOZO Crystal Buds are more competitive than other similarly priced competitors. It’s not without its flaws – the app’s connection to the earbuds is slow and sometimes fails, requiring you to tap connect repeatedly or “+”. However, it does have some nice features:
- Check the battery level of the earbuds
- Custom touch controls
- Check for firmware update
- Choose between 16 preset equalizers
- Create and save custom equalizer setting
The 16 preset equalizers are very useful – they just tweak the sound a bit. Still, it’s nice to be able to boost or cut the low frequencies with Bass+ or Bass-.
In addition to presets, you can tap the sound curve on your phone and swipe up and down at each vertical increment. You can also save custom EQ settings so you don’t have to do it every time you using the Crystal Buds.
The Crystal Buds have a clear sound and prominent mids – they’re all solid. Instruments sound very real with high reductions and good separation. Female vocals and high frequencies are clear and detailed, with high brightness but not excessive.
The bass on “Standard” is a bit loose and harsh, too forward presence for my liking, and I’m leaning more towards a warmer and more bass sound. This is when the preset EQ steps in – with the Bass+ EQ, the amount of low frequencies is increased a bit without destroying the mids and highs too much.
Conclusion
The biggest feature of TOZO Crystal Buds (TOZO T18) is the surprisingly sound quality and 16 preset equalizers. They are a great inexpensive music earbuds – good for listen music. The simplicity and reliability of the touch controls, digital battery percentage display, high water resistance rating, and long battery life are all plus points.
