Shanling MTW60 review: The first TWS earbuds under $35!

As Shanling’s first TWS earbuds, the Shanling MTW60 has demonstrated competitiveness in many aspects. The overall sound performance exceeds the expectations of its price range and has a great budget. The disadvantages are also very obvious, including not supporting multi-point connection, wireless charging, and app, etc.

Shanling MTW60 specs and features:

  • 4 – 6 hours playback of per charge (ANC on/off)
  • Charging case can charge earbuds fully 4 times
  • IPX4 waterproof rating (rain and sweat resistant)
  • 35dB ANC noise cancelling & Transparency mode

Appearance Design and Comfort

The Shanling MTW60 charging case uses a transparent window design (case lid), so you can see the earbuds inside without opening the lid. The case is made of matte plastic material, and the overall texture is quite good.

There is a large transparent plastic cover on the front of the charging cas, and an LED indicator light at the bottom. The charging port is designed at the bottom and uses the current mainstream Type-C port. The damping of the transparent lid is moderate, and there will be no shaking during the opening and closing process.

Shanling MTW60 earbuds adopt an in-ear design, and the overall design is similar to AirPods. The weight of a single earbud is only 3g, which is light and portable, and you can hardly feel the burden when wearing it. Even if you wear it for a long time, you can still maintain a comfortable wearing experience. It comes with silicone eartips of multiple sizes to take into account different ear canal sizes. The eartips are very soft and have good antibacterial ability.

Connectivity, Controls and Battery Life

The earbuds use Bluetooth 5.3 technology and support SBC and AAC codec. When connecting for the first time, just select “Shanling MTW60” in the bluetooth device list of your phone to quickly connect. When you use it again, open the lid to automatically connect to the last successfully paired bluetooth device.

The MTW60 has a large touch area for easy blind operation. Single-tap to volume +/-, double-tap to pause/play music and answer/end call, triple-tap to switch tracks, and long press for 2 seconds to switch between standard mode, ANC mode, and transparency mode.

They last up to 6 hours on a single charge with ANC off, and up to 34 hours in total. When ANC on, they can last up to 4 hours. Plus, they support fast charging.

Games and Video Playback

The Shanling MTW60 plays videos without issues on both Android and iPhone. There’s lipsync performance in video apps like YouTube and Apple TV.

Officially, the latency is as low as 50ms, but there is no dedicated low-latency game mode. Unfortunately, there are no other special features like multipoint connection, wireless charging, low-latency mode or app support.

ANC Noise Cancelling and Calls

Shanling MTW60 is equipped with Active Noise Cancelling + ENC dual-mic call noise cancelling technology, with a maximum noise cancelling depth of 35dB. By long pressing the earbuds, you can quickly switch between ANC mode, transparency mode and standard mode.

My evaluation of their noise cancelling ability is just enough. The ANC mode has a filtering effect of about 85% on the sound of cars on the road and the low-frequency noise in the subway. With the passive noise cancelling ability of the earbuds, it is sufficient whether listening to music or playing games. The only drawback is that when switching to ANC mode, the wind noise is more likely to appear, while the other two modes do not have such a problem.

The transparency mode on the Shanling MTW60 will let in brighter ambient noise when you need it, allowing you to hear your surroundings. Playing music at 68% volume, the feature is not very useful when talking to others, so it is best to pause the music.

As for the ENC call noise cancelling effect, it can’t be said to be very good. At least in a not very noisy environment, it is very easy to make calls.

Sound Quality of Shanling MTW60

Shanling MTW60 is equipped with a 13mm DLC diaphragm dynamic driver and only supports SBC and AAC decoding.

Shanling MTW60 is a popular tune that focuses on dynamic rhythm, thick, smooth, and popular tastes. They focuses on thickness and low-frequency quantity to the greatest extent, and further enhances the frequency response range to create a rich atmosphere.

The low-frequency quantity, presence, atmosphere and immersion are all excellent. The low-frequency extension is deep and powerful, with both power and delicacy and elasticity. The high-frequency is bright but not harsh, with very good transparency and details. The mid-frequency vocals are full, clear and natural.

Most importantly, Shanling MTW60 does not over-render the sound, focusing on high fidelity, further maximizing the presentation of the tri-frequency.

Conclusion

As an entry-level ANC earbuds, Shanling MTW60 is sufficient for use in leisure, commuting, business trips, outings and light oxygen sports. The MTW60 has demonstrated competitiveness in many aspects. The disadvantages are also very obvious, and it does not support multi-point connection, wireless charging and app, etc.
