Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 review: Sports partner with better sounding

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is still designed for sports, with the iconic ear hook and neck hook. The difference is that it uses the innovative DualPitch dual-unit technology. It can not only greatly improve the sound quality, but also effectively reduce the numbness caused by bone conduction vibration – both the sound quality and comfort have been fully upgraded.

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 specs and features:

Appearance Design and Comfort

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 adopts an open design without an in-ear structure, which is more comfortable to wear for a long time. The earhook structure fits the contour of the ear and is very slim, reducing the impact on glasses.

The left sound unit is equipped with a raised physical button, and there is a long tuning hole next to it. The earhook structure is slender and covered with soft silicone material, which is comfortable to touch.

The right headphone control part is made of silicone + metal material, with a brand logo and indicator light on the outside. There are two buttons at the bottom – volume +/-, and the + button is also the power button. There is also a USB-C charging port on the side, which is protected by a waterproof plug.

The ear hook and neck hook are made of flexible titanium alloy material, and the angle of the headphone against the face is optimized, so the clamping force is softer and there is no obvious clamping feeling when wearing it. The ear hook and neck hook are wrapped with soft silicone material, which is comfortable to touch.

The weight of the headphone is well controlled, and there is no obvious burden when wearing them. They can also maintain good stability during exercise, and are not prone to moving back and forth or loosening. Whether running, climbing or cycling, the good comfort and stability allow me to wear them for a longer time without discomfort.

As a professional sports headphones, the OpenRun Pro 2 has an IP55 waterproof rating, which means it can withstand light rain or sweat. Plus, it comes with a waterproof storage bag that you can hold in your hand or hang on the backpack.

Connectivity, App, Controls and Battery Life

When the device is powered off, press and hold the volume+ button for about 5 seconds to automatically enter the pairing state – the indicator light flashes red and blue alternately. Find the “OpenRun Pro 2 by Shokz” device in the bluetooth list on your phone and connect it.

Also, the OpenRun Pro 2 supports multipoint connection, which can connect two bluetooth devices at the same time – you need to enable this feature in the app first.

After installing the Shokz App, the connected headphones will be automatically recognized. On the app, you can check the battery level of the headphones, switch between 4 sound modes, and customize the sound effects. The app also provides song playback/switching, firmware upgrades, reminder tone settings, etc.

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is equipped with 3 physical buttons with rich control functions. Click the “+” and “-” to adjust the volume. The volume+ is also the power button – press and hold for 2 seconds to turn on, and 3 seconds to turn off. Single-tap the multi-function button to play/pause music, double-tap to switch to the next song, and triple-tap to the previous song.

Charging, Battery Life and Calls

The OpenRun Pro 2 abandons the magnetic charging port and adopts the Type-C port, and also has a waterproof design. The outside is a waterproof plug to makes the charging port reach IPX7 waterproof performance.

The headphone has a battery life of up to 12 hours and a standby time of up to 10 days. You don’t have to worry too much about battery life during long time to exercise or training. Plus, they support fast charging – charging for 5 minutes to listening music for 150 minutes.

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 adopts the dual-microphone design and is also designed to anti-wind noise for outdoor use. There are two sound receiving holes on the rear microphone of the headphone to balance the air pressure and reduce the impact of airflow on the microphone. The internal sound channel adopts a winding design to reduce wind noise by reducing wind speed. Plus, combined with the AI call noise reduction algorithm, the voice calls are clearer.

Acoustic Configuration, Sound Quality and Leakaging

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 uses two sound units. The bone conduction sound unit is responsible for the mid-high frequency part, and the air conduction bass unit is responsible for the low-frequency. The bass unit has a 18mmx11mm ring-shaped diaphragm inside to enhance the low-frequency output.

Combined with the Shokz OpenBass™ 2.0 algorithm, it can dynamically adjust the low and high frequency according to the full-frequency volume, ensuring that the treble is not distorted and the bass extends deeper. The headphone also support DRC dynamic adjustment, which can compensate for EQ balance according to the real-time full-frequency volume, so that each frequency band has richer details.

The low-frequency of OpenRun Pro 2 is fuller and more flexible than the bone conduction headphones I used before. Plus, the position of the vocals is accurate, and the layering and clarity of the guitar, bass, and drums are also good. Overall, the sound quality really brought me a lot of surprises. You can also choose different sound modes in the app, and the presets include standard mode, vocal mode, bass boost, and treble boost. If you are not satisfied, you can also customize the sound style.

The headphone is equipped with Shokz DirectPitch directional sound field technology, which can bring more efficient directional sound transmission. In the office, when the volume is adjusted to 30%, it is difficult for people next to you to hear the sound. When the volume is increased to 50%, people nearby can hear a little sound.

Thanks to the use of bone-air dual units and frequency division technology, the low frequency is allocated to the air conduction unit, which reduces vibration from the root – even if the volume is turned up high, there is no obvious vibration. There is basically no vibration numbness in daily use, and it is more comfortable to wear.

Since the headphone is designed with an open-ear design, you can hear the ambient sound when wearing them to make safer to use outdoors. However, if you go to a noisy environment, the music listening experience will be affected.

Conclusion

The product strength of Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is satisfactory, but what surprised me most is its sound quality. Whether it is low-frequency, soundstage or sound details, they have been greatly improved. If you are a sports enthusiast who has high requirements for comfort and sound quality, I highly recommend you to try the OpenRun Pro 2 sports headphones.
